You were Made for a mission

February 15, 2004
Week Six of Purpose

Gathering in Christ's name

Call to worship

Leader: Grace and Peace to you this day
from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

People: Blessed be the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing,
Leader: Before the world was made, God chose us in Christ
to be holy and blameless before him in love.

People: According to God's great pleasure,
we are adopted as God's children,
redeemed according to God's good pleasure.
Leader: In Christ we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

All: For this reason we bow before the Father.
To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
to all generations, forever and ever.

Announcements

Next Sunday, February 22, we will have the opportunity to share our stories from our "Purpose Driven Life" journey instead of a sermon. Has God grabbed your attention in a new way? Or challenged you anew? Have you heard God's voice calling you? Do you have a story, scripture, image etc to share?

From the Pastors: Maren Hange will be attending Virginia Mennonite Pastor's conference Friday evening and Saturday, February 20-21 at the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center. Roy will return Sunday late evening, February 22, from his trip to Iran. In case of an emergency contact a member of the Pastoral Care Team or Maren on the cell phone.

The Catholic Worker is holding a forum on Tuesday, Feb 17 called "If I work for peace should I pay for war?" at the Worker Community house: 615 Baily Road (near Prospect) in Charlottesville, at 6:30 p.m. If you would like more info or specific directions, their phone number is 295-1388.

"In Concert for Peace" will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. at Park View Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg. Carol Ann Weaver (formerly on music faculty of EMU) and Rebecca Campbell, Canadian composer/performer from Conrad Grebel College, will perform music composed to celebrate a vision of peace.

A Men's Retreat will be held at Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center on March 12-14. Myron Augsburger will be the guest speaker. Come for a time of meaningful worship, inspired teaching, great fellowship, recreation, and reflection. The registration deadline is February 27. For more information, contact WCRC at 757-566-2256 or visit www.wcrc.info. The event is co-sponsored with Mennonite Men of Virginia.

Funds are needed to purchase turkey for processing at the Mennonite Relief Center on March 1-5. We are canning turkey for MCC instead of beef, due to the case of Mad Cow disease. Please send contributions to Mennonite Relief Center, P.O. Box 519, Dayton, VA 22821. For more information, contact Leon Rhodes at 540-867-9751. See the MCC website at www.mcc.org/getinv/canning for additional information about canning.

Prayers and Praises

VMBM: A few months ago, Jyrell Hess, a 10-year-old missionary kid in Lushnje, Albania, wrote, "We just came back from Macedonia and Greece and I was so glad to be back [in Albania] where I could understand the language and speak to the people! I am also glad to have a few good friends in the village. Nardi is my best friend."

Mennonite Mission Network: The annual meeting of the Instituto Bíblico Anabautista tutors will be held on Feb. 20-23. Pray for God's wisdom and guidance as the 22 tutors and staff members plan for activities for the year.

Pray for the local services for people in need: Love Inc., Shelter for Help in Emergency, Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

Pray for the 40 day spiritual journey as part of our church's vision process:

  1. Our selves, that we all will be drawn closer to God and each other.
  2. Our church, relationships within our church, our vision as a church; our facility needs
  3. Our community and our mission of witness and service
